About Forestry Department


The Forestry department was established due to demand for capacity building in the forestry sector. In 1999, Forestry courses were offered as an option in the Crop Science Department. In 2001 a fully fledged department of Forestry and Horticulture was established under the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at Bunda College of Agriculture. In September 2013 a fully fledged Forestry Department was established following a split of the Department of Forestry and Horticulture in the Faculty of Natural Resources. The vision of the Forestry Department is to be the University’s centre of excellence in training, research, extension and consultancy in Forestry and related fields within Malawi and the SADC region. The mission of the Forestry Department is to advance knowledge, skills and entrepreneurship through teaching, research, extension and consultancies in forestry sector for sustainable food production, good nutrition, co-management and conservation of forest resources and improved income of rural and urban populations. Currently the department offers one undergraduate degree programme, Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry, and four postgraduate degree programmes, namely Master of Science Degree in Forestry (Environmental/Social Forestry), Master of Science Degree in Agroforestry, Master of Science Degree in Landscape Restoration and Doctorate Degree in Forestry.
