The BSc. in Forestry is a taught degree program which provides training to enhance masterly of theoretical foundations, analytical approaches, principles and practices relevant for forest management, environmental conservation and restoration ecology. The purpose of BSc in Forestry program is to train and prepare students to excel in a diversity of careers in forestry, forest conservation and related fields. Thus, the BSc program is designed to provide the knowledge, skills, and experience students need to analyze and understand forest management across multiple scales and perspectives, and to develop students’ critical thinking skills, needed to address the complex contemporary challenges associated with sustainable forest management and conservation. The curriculum ensures that students develop the ability to coordinate and manage all aspects of sustainable forestry through an education that combines a strong foundation in natural sciences, social sciences and life skills. The program’s major areas of focus include: biodiversity, ecosystem services and nature conservation; forest protection and management of biological invasions; restoration ecology, soil and water interactions; forest management and planning; forest governance, policy and development; forest and forest-based products for a greener future; forest and climate change.
The curriculum is delivered in a blended mode involving face-to-face, ODeL and field excursions/hands-on field classes, internships, research experience, and forest management projects. The teaching and learning methods and strategies include lectures, demonstrations, online or audio-visual materials, research, seminars, community experience, industrial attachment, and field excursions. The tasks are split across semesters and distributed over the entire program duration to suit the prescribed workload.
Applicants seeking admission to study Bachelor of Science in Forestry must satisfy the minimum LUANAR requirement and Faculty of Natural Resources entry requirements. A student to be admitted must satisfy any of the following minimum requirements:
i. Either has passed Biology or Biological Sciences with a pass-with-credit in the Malawi School Certificate of Education. In addition, a student must have passed any two subjects from the following options:
Option A
Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics
Option B
Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Agriculture
ii. Or have a pass-with-credit Certificate in forest sciences from a LUANAR Senate recognized institution.
iii. Or have a diploma in forest sciences from a LUANAR Senate recognized institution with passes in basic sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics)
iv. Or have a pass-with-credit diploma in forest sciences from a LUANAR Senate recognized institution.
v. Or have any other qualifications accepted by LUANAR senate as being equivalent to i, ii and iii above.
Applicants in possession of diploma in forest sciences may at the discretion of the Faculty of Natural Resources, be admitted into year two of the programme.
