About Agriculture and Food Systems Department


The Department of Agriculture was established in 2012 as the NRC was transitioning from operating under a Trust to a University following the Act of Parliament 2011. The Department started with four Themes namely Agriculture, Animal Health Food and Nutrition and Horticulture. The Department has grown to having 9 Thematic Areas which are actively involved in teaching, research and consultancies. The themes are as follows: Agribusiness, AgroFood Processing, Animal Health, Crop Production, Food & Nutrition, Food Technology, Horticulture, Livestock Production and Rural Development. The Department has in recent times also introduced courses such as Certificate in Climate Smart Agriculture, Diploma in AgroFood Processing and a Degree in Food Technology. Besides the generic programs, we also do offer tailor made training programs according to specific client requirements such as SPAG, AIYAP and WIL training projects. <br><br>

The Department has a total of 32 members of staff where 3 Members have PhD qualification, 15 Masters Degrees, 7 Staff Associates with Bachelor’s Degrees, 6 Technicians with 3 of them possessing Bachelor’s Degrees and the other 3 with Diplomas but currently upgrading to Degree level. The gender distribution is 12 Female members and 20 male members of staff. The Department works closely with Academic Staff from the Natural Resources Department from the same Faculty in order to deliver the various Diploma and Degree courses which are offered.<br><br<

All courses are have a strong focus on practicals, community outreach and industrial experience. These aspects help the graduates from the program to develop competences that would enable them to be employable. The courses also have an entrepreneurial aspect so that the learners can also establish their own enterprises upon completion of their study programs as well as employ others.<br><br>

The Department has a vision to grow and develop within the mandate of the university. In the future, we envisage to develop other Degree programs in order to increase access to tertiary education as well as meet stakeholder demands and market needs. We aim to continuously improve the quality of our training programs and research capacity through:

<li>Strengthening effective partnerships with other Departments within the University as well as Other institutions of higher learning within the region</li>
