1. Master of Science In Aquaculture
The MSc in Aquaculture produces highly skilled professionals with the ability to design, or operate, or manage aquaculture facilities, and provide relevant policy recommendations for the advancement of aquaculture in Malawi, the region and beyond. Therefore, the programme aims at training graduates from Malawi, the region and beyond to utilize different experiences drawn from across the globe geared at tackling global challenges faced in aquaculture as a fast-developing food industry vis a vis population growth, increased food and nutrition needs, declining fisheries resources and climate change.
2. Master of Science In Fisheries
The MSc in Fisheries programme’s main aim is to produce highly skilled professionals with the ability to manage fisheries resources for regeneration and sustainable exploitation through development, assessment, implementation and recommendation of appropriate strategies and policies in Malawi, the region and beyond. Therefore, the programme aims at training relevant graduates from Malawi, the region and beyond to utilize different experiences drawn from across the globe geared at tackling global challenges faced in fisheries as a fast-developing food industry vis a vis population growth, increased food and nutrition needs and climate change.
3. Master of Science In Agriccultural Economics
The MSc in Agricultural and Applied Economics programme provides a theoretical foundation in Economics and its application for almost all other courses in the program. Specifically, the programme is intended to enable students to:
Acquire and use the language and logic of microeconomic theories of the consumer and the firm,
Apply microeconomic theories to problems of agriculture, rural development and the environment,
Acquire knowledge of the practical uses of microeconomics in research and management
4. Master of Science In Food Science and Technology
The MSc in Food Science and Technology programme offers high quality training in food science, food processing, food technology, and food safety and quality assurance management. The programme allows a more comprehensive and holistic approach to investigations and research in food processing. This is helping to meet the demand for high caliber technical personnel by the food processing sector in Malawi and surrounding countries.
5. Master of Science in Agribusiness Management
The MSc in Agribusiness Management programme is developing and enhancing managerial capacity of the agribusiness sector of Malawi and sub-Saharan Africa to be able to transform the production oriented agricultural sector into a competitive and market oriented agribusiness sector. The curriculum for the Agribusiness Management has been designed to equip students with adequate research skills to address problems and from such research generate information and technology for advancement of the agribusiness sector.
6. Master of Science in Rural Development and Extension
The MSc programme is a two years programme offered by the department of extension. In the first-year students are oriented to advanced theories informing the disciplines of extension, rural development and agrarian transformation. The students are also equipped with apropos research methodologies in their first year. Upon completing the first year, the MSc candidates are expected to conceptualize and present a research proposal to the faculty members in the department. Second year of their studies is dedicated to data collection, analysis and writing of their thesis. The thesis is examined by the supervisors, internal and external assessors before it can be subjected to a viva.
7. PhD in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science
The PhD in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science was introduced to develop and build capacity in order to support economic advancement of the RUFORUM region, especially in the Aquaculture and Fisheries Sector, to equip students with a deeper understanding of the theoretical framework underlying aquaculture and fisheries sciences and practices, to equip students with skills in articulating aquaculture and fisheries issues for public and private sectors, as well as, for international and non-governmental organizations and to strengthen regional collaboration while rationalizing the use of existing resources(human and physical) in the region.
8. PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics
The program is designed to meet regional as well as international demands for highly qualified and relevant professionals. These professionals will assist in guiding policy on the critical regional problems such as food insecurity, poverty and deterioration of the environment through provision of services, teaching and training, research, outreach, consultancy and sound management.
