Overview
Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science is 3-to-4-year full-time programme. The final basis for granting the degree shall be the candidate’s grasp of the subject matter of Animal Science and a demonstrated ability to do independent research. In addition, the candidate must have acquired the ability to express thoughts clearly and convincingly in both oral and written form. Some of the evidence that the candidate has grasped the subject matter and has acquired the envisioned ability shall include but not limited to research outputs such as scientific publications in reputable journals, attendance or participation in conferences or workshops, effective participation in teaching, undergraduate or postgraduate students’ supervision, and outreach activities which constitute the core mandate of the department. The programme shall also strive to stimulate research-based innovation and entrepreneurship among the candidates. Issue of patents and ownership of technologies generated during the programme shall be guided by the University regulations.
Duration
The duration of the programme is a maximum of 48 months.
Research outputs, patents and innovations
The students enrolled in the Programme will be encouraged to participate in the Department’s research and outreach activities around the Bunda College Campus, within Malawi and abroad. The programme shall require students to do a research project as a fulfilment requirement for the award of a degree. Students and their supervisors shall be encouraged to publish their research work, make discoveries and innovations and patent them.
Community outreach activities related to the programme
The programme shall require students to work in teams to solve communities’ problems and co-create animal science innovations to address current and emerging problems such as climate change, antimicrobial resistance, emerging animal diseases and low productivity.
The programme entry requirements shall be MSc. in Animal Science or closely related field. The MSc. degree must have been obtained through a taught and research programme. Candidates with an MSc. degree obtained through a taught work only will not be considered. The department shall promote diversity, equity and inclusion in its programme offering.
