Director of Students Affairs, Mrs Nkhonjera presenting the gifts to one of the beneficiaries
The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), through the office of Director of Students Affairs, on 24th January 2019, launched a Charity Basket Initiative to help needy students at Bunda Campus.
The assorted items were donated by LUANAR staff.

Speaking after the launch, the Director of Students Affairs (DOSA), Mrs Elizabeth Khonjera, said the initiative was established to help students who were struggling to get by on the campus.

“Because of the many issues of students telling me their problems and challenges they are facing, I tried to talk to several people who have contributed several items to help them at least ease some of their burdens on campus. So today, we donated the items including clothes and groceries like soap, sugar and also sanitary pads,” she said.

One of the well-wishers who donated the items, Mrs Orpah Kabambe, said they were prompted to donate after discovering that a lot of students are lacking basic needs to survive on the campus.

“What prompted us to make the donation was through interaction with the DOSA and some of the students. We noticed that some of the students are going without food and some are even lacking clothes and other basic needs to survive on the campus, so we mobilized each other to donate money and other items they [donors] could afford. We got a good response and a lot of people donated,” she said.

The Male Warden, Mr Ntholo who was also present at the launch, said as a University, they were thankful for the kind gesture.

He said the donation through the Charity Basket initiative was very important to the students as most of them are economically challenged.

“This donation is a good gesture for the students because it shows that people are concerned and are seeing the suffering that the students are having,” He said.

He further encouraged the students to have a vision and focus on achieving it rather than worry about their problems.

The beneficiaries could not hide their joy as they expressed gratitude for the good gesture by the LUANAR Staff members.

“I am just happy that I have received these items. I will not be the same. I did not have most of the basic needs to survive on campus but this will help me live comfortably. I will no longer be worried about what I do not have,” said Florence, one of the beneficiaries.

Over 60 students received different items including clothes, groceries and sanitary pads.

The charity basket is an initiative that will run every month. Well-wishers can donate items through the DOSA or students’ social welfare directors.
