The Japanese Ambassador to Malawi, His Excellency Youichi Oya, visited the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) on 29 July 2025 as part of a learning tour aimed at strengthening partnerships and exploring new areas of collaboration.

During his visit, Ambassador Oya toured the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries, where the Japanese government funded infrastructure development in 1999. Ambassador Oya also visited the AquaFish Center, a regional hub for research in aquaculture and fisheries, to observe progress made since Japan’s initial investment.

LUANAR Vice Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Kaunda, expressed appreciation for Japan’s longstanding support, which has included infrastructure development, scholarships, and staff and student exchange programmes. He also held discussions with the ambassador on potential funding opportunities in other priority sectors of the university.

Japan has been a long-time partner in Malawi’s education and research development through technical and financial support.
