The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) played a key role in a crucial dialogue meeting on "Seed and seed systems" that brought together experts, policymakers, farmers, and stakeholders to address pressing issues surrounding seed quality and systems in Malawi. The gathering, organized by The Malawi Agroecology Hub, of which LUANAR is a member, highlighted the need for reform in the country's seed sector. The meeting revealed that the informal seed system, which provides a staggering 70% of the seeds used by farmers, was often overlooked and lacked sufficient research and government support.

This oversight not only hindered the sector's potential but also limited its contribution to the country's agricultural development. Stakeholders worked together to find ways to improve seed quality, increase access to seeds, and promote sustainable agriculture in Malawi. This collaborative effort was a vital step towards addressing the challenges facing the seed sector and ultimately supporting the country's farmers and agricultural growth. As Malawi strives to improve its agricultural productivity and food security, the need for a robust and inclusive seed system cannot be overstated. The dialogue meeting served as a timely reminder of the importance of collective action in shaping the country's agricultural future. The event, which took place on Friday at Ufulu Gardens, marked an important step towards reforming Malawi's seed sector.
