About Mr Numeri GERESOMO

About Dr Numeri Geresomo Dr. Numeri C. Geresomo is a Senior Lecturer in Human Nutrition in the Department of Human Nutrition and Health at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), Malawi. With a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from Egerton University, Kenya, he has over two decades of experience in nutrition programmes implementation and evaluation, nutrition surveillance, nutrition research, policy, and capacity building. His research focuses on addressing community nutrition problems, by promoting appropriate Nutrition and food security with a particular focus on maternal and child nutrition; improving dietary quality and safety; promoting sustainable food systems and healthy diets; nutrition education and behaviour change communication; policy formulation, appraisal and evaluation and gender-sensitive nutrition programming. Dr. Numeri Geresomo has contributed to development of national policies and strategic plans including the National Agriculture Policy (2023-230), National Multisector Nutrition Policy (2025-2030), National Micronutrients Strategy (2025-2030) and other various national documents on nutrition and food security. He has conducted research and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. As a Senior Lecturer, Dr. Geresomo has supervised over 20 postgraduate students and has examined over 15 postgraduate Theses. He has played key roles in institutional leadership including Head of Department of Human Nutrition and Health (2012-2014), Deputy Dean of Faculty of Foods and Human Sciences (2022-2025) including serving on Malawi's Nutrition Policy Advisory Team. Dr. Geresomo is a Trainer of Trainers in Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture, Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) and Nutrition Education and Communication (NEC). As an experienced Consultant, Dr. Geresomo has extensively consulted for local and international NGOs such as Care International, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), World Relief, Concern Worldwide, World Vision, GIZ; United Nations agencies such as UNICEF, WFP and FAO. For twenty years as an academician, his teaching responsibilities have included undergraduate courses (Food and Nutrition; Assessment of Nutritional Status, Community Nutrition; Nutrition Throughout the Life Cycle, Household Food Security, Food and Nutrition Planning, Nutrition in Emergencies) and postgraduate courses (Food Syatems and Health Diets; Global Nutrition Programmes and Policies, Nutrition Communication and Advocacy). Research in this area aims to understand the appropriate foods, preparation methods and feeding practices that promote proper growth and development. Understanding the knowledge, attitudes and practices of mothers and caregivers may assist in coming up with child feeding interventions to improve childcare and nutrition. The research links nutritive values of complementary foods and their safety. Analysis of policies on food production and nutrition practices generates data and information necessary for responding to emerging nutrition problems and needs. This provides children a head-start in life to fulfil development milestones and attain their growth potential. Nutrition and Education attainment

Research in this area will focus on formative and Operational Research on school feeding programmes and their effects on learners (school attendance, retention, performance), participation of communities and benefits of school feeding programmes will be investigated. Communities will be sensitized on the significance of nutrition during primary school years and its latent impact on sustainable livelihoods and community development.
