Dr Thomas Nyanda Reuben is an Associate Professor in Irrigation Engineering at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) in the Department of Agricultural Engineering under the Faculty of Agriculture. He is also the Director of Quality Assurance for the institution since September 1, 2024 having acted on this position for one year. His work at LUANAR dates back to 2003 to-date. His education and experience are as follows: Education and Experience: PhD and MSc Irrigation Engineering, Utah State University, USA (2013 & 2002, resp.); BSc and Diploma in Agriculture, University of Malawi, Malawi (1997 & 1993, resp.); Postdoctoral Researcher, Utah Water Research Laboratory, USA (2013-2015); Assistant Lecturer, NRC, Malawi (2001 – 2003); Irrigation Officer, Department of Irrigation Services, Malawi (1999-2001); Secondary School Teacher, Malawi (1994-1995; 1997-1999). His roles and responsibilities include Teaching, Research, Outreach, and Consultancies; Managing Directorate of Quality Assurance staff; Ensuring quality LUANAR services and products by overseeing and providing professional guidance on quality the of teaching and learning, examination processes, infrastructure, and administrative functions at LUANAR; Co-Chairing University Teaching and Learning Committee; and he is a member of the University Senate. He has vast experience teaching various courses including Groundwater Hydraulics, Hydraulic Structures Design, Drainage Systems Design, Irrigation Scheme Management, Irrigation Water Management, Environmental Management of Irrigation Projects, Agricultural Waste Management, Statics and Strength of Materials, Farm Structures, Physics, Principles of Irrigation, and Rural Water Supply and undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Dr Nyanda has expereience working on projects and developing innovations as follows: 1) He is a Researcher for EU Participatory Action Research for Greening and Growing Malawi (PAUCHI) Project. He has supervised at least seventy-five (75) undergraduate research students: in the fields of irrigation, and groundwater quality and transport; Ten (10) MSc research students in the fields of Groundwater quality and flow; Irrigation; Soil erosion modelling; and Groundwater utilization modelling at LUANAR since 2006; and Co-supervised one (1) PhD candidate and four (4) MSc students at Utah State University, USA (2009-2015). His research interests include Irrigation and Drainage; Environmental Engineering; Remote Sensing; Groundwater and Surface Water quality and quantity.
