About Mr Mwabuke Nkhata

I am an Irrigation Engineer with a strong academic and professional background in agricultural water management. I hold a BSc (2009) and MSc (2019) in Irrigation Engineering from the University of Malawi (Bunda College of Agriculture) and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). My expertise spans topographic mapping, irrigation system design and layout, as well as the application of GIS and Remote Sensing in irrigation planning and management. Currently, I lecture in Irrigation Engineering and related programs, where I contribute to training the next generation of professionals in the field.

Use of GIS and Remote Sensing in solving Irrigation and Water Engineering problems

My research interest lies in applying GIS and Remote Sensing to address challenges in irrigation and water engineering. I am particularly focused on how spatial data and satellite imagery can be used to monitor crop growth, estimate water requirements, assess soil moisture, and optimize irrigation scheduling. GIS provides the analytical framework for mapping, modeling, and managing water distribution systems, while Remote Sensing enables real-time monitoring of agricultural and hydrological conditions. By integrating these tools, I aim to develop innovative, data-driven approaches that enhance water use efficiency, improve irrigation system performance, and promote sustainable agricultural production in resource-limited settings.
