Presentation of awards to best perfoming and under privileged students by LWB
The Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) has awarded eight top achieving engineering students from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) in recognition of their academic excellence. The ceremony, held yesterday at LUANAR’s Bunda Campus, highlighted LWB’s dedication to fostering education, innovation, and sustainable development in Malawi.
Professor Zachary Kasomekera, Chairman of the LUANAR Council, commended LWB for its commitment to empowering students and called on other institutions and private sector players to emulate the initiative.
“Investing in education is investing in Malawi’s future,” said Professor Kasomekera. “By supporting bright minds especially those facing financial challenges we will ensure a skilled workforce capable of driving sustainable development. LWB’s scholarship program is a shining example of corporate social responsibility and the transformative power of public-private partnerships.”
He emphasized the growing need for skilled professionals in engineering and environmental management, noting that such initiatives are crucial for building a competitive workforce.
In his remarks, His Majesty Inkosi Ya Makosi Mbwelwa V, Chairman of LWB, reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to education and environmental stewardship. He highlighted the longstanding collaboration between LWB and LUANAR, which extends beyond scholarships to include critical initiatives in water resource management.
“Our partnership with LUANAR goes beyond financial support,” he said. “Together, we have implemented the Catchment Management Strategy, conducted tree-planting initiatives to safeguard water sources, and even engaged students in designing LWB’s bottled water logo. These efforts reflect our shared vision for a sustainable future.”
In addition to honouring academic excellence, LWB provided financial support to four underprivileged students, easing the economic barriers that often hinder access to higher education.
Since its establishment in 2021, the LWB scholarship program has provided crucial financial assistance to 65 high-achieving students, enabling them to continue their studies without financial barriers. By the 2023-24 financial year, LWB had invested approximately MK 50 million in this initiative, reinforcing its long-term commitment to developing future professionals in Malawi.
