APA is in the process of developing the research agenda designed to empower researchers, postgraduate and postdoctoral students, and key stakeholders by fostering impactful studies that address the challenges outlined in agri-food systems. Specific objectives include: Through a well-defined research agenda, APA-ACE is positioned to address complex agri-food system challenges, contributing significantly to Malawi’s regional leadership in agricultural policy and sustainable development. The key research themes are as follows:
Harness multi-dimensional data approaches in agri-food investments to assess the environmental (biophysical), socio-cultural, political, institutional, technological, demographic, ecological, and economic factors influencing food production, distribution, marketing, and loss reduction. This approach seeks to enhance sustainable production and minimize waste, providing valuable insights for decision-making.
Encourage behavioral and mindset shifts across the agri-food supply chain for sustainable food environments, improved diets, nutrition, and health outcomes. This involves addressing belief systems, socio-cultural values, and fostering growth-oriented education to influence consumer choices and producer practices.
Implement gender-responsive, community-based methods to strengthen indigenous knowledge management. These approaches should promote rural innovations and climate management practices to improve resilience, reduce food loss, and prevent waste across agri-food systems.
Foster regional collaborations across agricultural value chains to enable adaptive, resilient, and comparative agri-food systems. These partnerships should aim to optimize tradeoffs, enhance synergies, and build a cohesive understanding of shared challenges and opportunities.
Evaluate how policies influence multidimensional agri-food system outcomes, including sustainability, biodiversity, and productivity. Establish pathways to address policy gaps and transition labor, capital, and skills from subsistence to more commercialized, medium-scale agriculture.
Develop an incubation center that leverages data-driven solutions to support agri-food system entrepreneurship, infrastructure, and technological innovation.
