PIL presenting a cheque to LUANAR

Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL) on Tuesday 8th November 2016 donated 100 million kwacha towards the construction of a multipurpose hall at LUANAR Bunda Campus.


Speaking at the handover ceremony, LUANAR Vice Chancellor, Professor George Kanyama Phiri thanked PIL for the donation saying the multipurpose hall will cushion the problem space which the University is currently facing due to its initiative in increasing access to education.


Speaking at the same function, LUANAR Board Chairman Professor James Seyani reiterated Vice Chancellor’s remarks adding that the donation was timely and that it will go a long way to assisting LUANAR achieve what it aspires to be a and that is a World Class University.


He said the hall will provide space suitable for a wide range of activities such as various exhibitions, poster sessions and receptions parties apart from the much needed teaching and learning space.


“We have therefore, made a proposition to name the multipurpose hall after the name of the donor. The hall will be called PIL Multipurpose Hall. This is in recognition of such a wonderful donation,” said Professor Seyani.


The Board Chairman further assured the donor that the University will use the funds for its intended purpose only, will speed up the process of constructing the hall and will take care of the hall once it is completed.


Presenting the donation PIL Board Chair, Mr Zubeir Bhana said his company cares most about Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number four which talks about quality education.


He added that PIL is committed to partnering with the government in promoting the acquisition of quality education. And it is for this reason that the institution contributed to the construction of a multipurpose hall at LUANAR.


“It’s PIL’s hope that this donation will go a long way in creating a conducive learning environment for students here at LUANAR and improve the overall University operations,” said Mr Bhana.


Mr Bhana further called on LUANAR students to jealously guard the facility.


In his remarks, the guest of honour, Dr Emmanuel Fabiano MP, Minister of Education Science and Technology, hailed PIL for the significant donation saying this is not just a donation to LUANAR as an institution but also to the whole nation.


“We all know that agriculture is the backbone of the country If we are to transform this sector we need to have well trained personnel and we cannot have well trained personnel if the learning environment is substandard. The donation therefore is timely and greatly needed,” said the Minister.


He further urged other players in the private sector to emulate from PIL gesture of partnering with government in promoting the acquisition of quality education through various means.
