Kawonga: In future the organization plans to embark on different activities
LUANAR Students through Youth for Development (YFD), a registered student organization at LUANAR has organized a fundraising event for needy students to be conducted today at Silver Stadium.

According to Limbani Kawonga, Programmes Coordinator for the organization, the idea of supporting needy students came about after looking at the huge number of students who are at a risk of being withdrawn from the university due to financial problems saying this initiated his organization to be embarking on different activities to raise funds for these needy students.

“Due to this some of the students fail to complete their education due to the financial problems. A large number of students has also failed to register because of tuition challenges. Due to poverty many students live in pathetic houses to meet the low cost and also they struggle to feed themselves and end up attending lectures while hungry,” said Kawonga.

He said the organization will involve the Catholic Commision for Justice and Peace (CCJP) LUANAR Chapter and Director of students Affairs in identifying the needy students and making sure that the funds have been used for its intended purpose.

“In future the organization plans to embark on different activities that will help to achieve the same objective,” he said.

The fundraising event whose guest of honour will be the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Honourable Richard Msowoya, will start with football and netball matches between members of parliament and LUANAR lecturers.

Apart from this there will be an open air disco among students from all colleges and universities both public and private in Lilongwe and later in the evening wailing brothers’ band, Lulu, K2B block, Mafo and Gibo Lantosi will perform.

Kawonga said there is hope that top government officials, companies, organizations, Bunda Alumni will patronize the event and that well-wishers can book their VIP seat at K50, 000 while the rest of the tickets are being sold at K2 500.

YFD aims at supporting needy students at all levels, promoting entrepreneurship and promoting networking among young people.
