Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) with funding from USAID, through the Legume Innovation Lab at Michigan State University organised a three-day workshop on research writing for publication.

The workshop which started on Monday 25th April 2016, targeted the University staff and postgraduate from all faculties.

Dr Lawrence Mapemba who was coordinating the training said the training was part of Feed the Future project which is supported by USAID and promotes production, consumption and marketing of legumes.

He said the project comes with capacity building of institutions that USAID is working with saying LUANAR being one of these institutions, its staff and postgraduate students were being trained on scientific writing for publication.

He said the training was giving insight on how to write for publication, how to look at reviewers and address their concerns as well as how to define a researchable problem so that researches are up to the required standards.

One of the participants, Ruth Magreta, a PhD student in Agricultural and Resource Economics said the training was crucial and timely as most of the students are now starting research in fulfilment of the requirements for their respective degrees.

“We are being trained on writing papers from the research for publications. Looking at the performance of postgraduate students very few publish in journals after completion of their research. This training has come at the right time in such a way that most students developing their research will align their research towards publication and I can see the numbers of publications by postgraduate students increasing from now onwards,” said Magreta.

The training was facilitated by experts from Kansas State University taking a comprehensive approach to the essence of publication.
