Students at LUANAR Bunda Campus last Friday elected their new union leaders. This year’s elections attracted 50 candidates of which 42 were male while only eight were female.
Peter Maurice M’bweza, an irrigation engineering student, who won with a landslide victory is now the new Bunda student’s union (BSU) president.
M’bweza got 867 votes seconded by Gift Google Mkathama who got 427 votes.
In an interview, M’bweza thanked his fellow students for voting for him and urged them to unite saying this it is necessary for them to achieve individual Goals.
“During my tenure, I will make sure that students realize their roles, responsibilities and moral values” he said.
He further urged government and different stakeholders to realize the needs and desires that University students have.
According to the chairperson of the 2016/2017 Bunda Electoral Commission, John Susuwele, the newly elected student union will fully be in power when a handover ceremony with the previous union is done.
He said the previous student’s union has welcomed the new union with a warm heart and promised to help the new union on their journey to leadership.
He further said independent organizations such as Catholic commission for justice and peace (CCJP) and some Church leaders took part to ensure fair elections.
“As intellectuals, we wanted a fair election and we had accomplished it and there has been an improvement in female participation as the number of female candidates increased as compared to last year” Susuwele said.
The Bunda election constitution only allows second and third year students to compete for different positions in the union.
