About Dr Michael CHIPETA

Dr. Michael Chipeta is a Plant Breeder and Senior Lecturer, currently serving as the Head of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). He teaches Plant Breeding and Biometrical Genetics to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and actively supervises student research projects. Dr. Chipeta holds a B.Sc. in Horticulture and M.Sc. in Plant Breeding from the University of Malawi, and earned his Ph.D. in Plant Breeding from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He is a 2018 Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellow at the University of Tennessee, USA, a Fellow of the African Science Leadership Programme, an Affiliate of the African Academy of Sciences, and an African Plant Breeding Academy Scholar. Beyond his academic responsibilities, Dr. Chipeta leads the Cowpea Breeding Programme in Malawi, focusing on the selection and development of high-yielding, disease-resistant, drought-tolerant, and nutritionally enhanced cowpea varieties. His work aims to improve food security, income generation, climate resilience, and nutrition for farming communities in Malawi.
