About Dr TCHUWA Frank

Dr Frank Tchuwa is a Deputy Head and Senior Lecturer in Rural Development and Extension at Bunda College of the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). Frank holds a PhD in Development Studies from the Natural Resources Institute of the University of Greenwich (United Kingdom) (2020), a MSc. in Rural Development and Extension (2012), and a BSc. in Agricultural Extension (2009) both from the University of Malawi. Frank has been awarded and successfully conducted several research studies focusing on operationalization of multi-sectoral approaches and farmer-centred models (i.e., Farmer Field Schools, Farmer Research Networks, Farmer Research Teams, and the Lead Farmer) that support validation and experimentation of agricultural innovation (with a focus on agroecology and seed systems for Neglected and Underutilised Species-NUS, also known as Orphan Crops). His research has gathered evidence on how innovations for achieving sustainable agri-food systems are scaled in diverse context and contribute to transformation and resilience of rural livelihoods. Frank has experience in documenting case studies and evaluating agricultural extension programmes that focus on Governance of Sustainable Seed and Food Systems, family farming and the integration of scientific and indigenous knowledge in addressing social-economic and biophysical shocks faced by rural agrarian communities in Sub-Sahara Africa. From 2021 to 2024, he was awarded the Post Doctorate Fellowship by the Food Systems Network (FSNet) Africa, partnership involving University of Pretoria (South Africa), University of Leeds (United Kingdom) and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Malawi). Currently, he is coordinating the Greening and Growing Malawi-(UCHI) action and the Research on Agroecology Network for Southern Africa” (RAENS) action both which are funded by the European Union as well as development of the Co-Creating Sustainable Agr-Food System Tool with support from the McKnight Foundation.
