SECURITY ON CAMPUS

The Campus Security team comprise of Malawi Police Service team and a Private security company as well as LUANAR Security team. The teams protect the wellbeing of people and the security of property around the clock through a variety of measures, both on and off campus.

The primary objective for Campus Security is to keep everyone within the campus community free from harm and the threat of harm. We do this through ensuring we have sufficient resources to be able to react quickly when responding to calls for help, and also by being able to provide pro-active advice and reassurance, when needed.

We cannot do this alone. We know that collaborative working is vital at LUANAR and we work closely with departments and individuals so they can act on sound and simple advice to protect themselves and their property.

Security’ is everyone’s responsibility, from the protection of personal assets and those belonging to the University, through to crime prevention on a personal safety level. The campus is an extremely safe place to be at any time of day or night, however, there may be risks when travelling away from the University, particularly in and around town and city centres.

Away from campus

  • Avoid isolated places, especially at night
  • Stick to well-lit and overlooked routes, wherever possible
  • Try to travel in groups of two or more people. Perhaps ask your friends to join you
  • If you are going out alone, tell someone where you're going and what time you expect to be back
  • Mobile phones, laptop computers and digital music players are attractive to opportunist criminals. Be careful about where you take them and how you use them
  • Don't accept lifts from strangers
  • Trust your ‘gut feeling’ and avoid people and situations that make you feel uneasy

Be safe whereever you are

On Campus

  • Protect your belongings by locking your office/room door every time you leave
  • Don't leave purses, phones, laptops and other valuables unattended
  • Don't leave purses, phones, laptops and other valuables unattended
  • Politely challenge anyone you see ‘tailgating’ behind you when entering buildings or other secure areas. Ask to see their University identity card before you let them in. If they refuse, or take offence at being challenged, inform Campus Security

Be safe in your student home

  • Always lock your room door on campus, or the front and rear doors off campus, even when there is someone at home. This is because most burglars are opportunists and may try to steal items that are located close to open doors and windows, such as wallets, phones, keys and laptops
  • Do not allow anyone into your home unless you know who they are
  • Do not leave ID cards, cash cards, money, cheque books or keys lying around - do not put temptation in the way of your house mates or visitors!
  • Never leave your home unlocked when you leave it - even if it is only for a short period of time. Make sure all windows are closed and locked
  • Do not leave your personal belongings where they can be seen through doors and windows
  • If you see anyone acting suspiciously, report it to Campus Security
