The ODL Directorate was established in 2016 with an initial enrolment of 441 students. As of January 2020, the student enrollment was over 1500 students. Currently, LUANAR ODL offers four academic programs: BSc in Agribusiness Management, BSc in Agricultural Economics, BSc in Extension and BSc in Agricultural Innovations.

LUANAR ODL has adopted a modular approach to learning, which is delivered through a blended mode that comprises face to face interaction and distance mode to support students, enhanced by e-learning technologies.
The directorate places strong emphasis on student support services. This is being achieved by operating satellite centers in Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre where students have access to Internet and ICT equipment, library resources, tutoring services based on areas requiring support, guidance and counselling, and other support services to support teaching and learning.
