Dr. Wilson Jere is a holder of a PhD in Wildlife and Fisheries Science obtained from Pennsylvania State University (USA), a Master of Science in Aquaculture and Aquatic Resource Management from Asian Institute of Technology (Bangkok, Thailand) and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with distinction from University of Malawi. As an undergraduate student, Dr. Jere was the recipient of the Norsk Hydro Best Soil Science Student Award and National Bank of Malawi Best Student Achievement Award in the Faculty of Agriculture. Dr. Jere is an Associate Professor in Fish Genetics in the Aquaculture and Fisheries Science Department. He is current Head of Department since September 2012. He is also the current Chairperson of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (FSTAP) in Malawi whose role is to enhance the coordination role of government, research and academic institutions, development projects, NGOs and private sector in the development of science based, demand driven fisheries management, governance and value chain knowledge and ensure this information is stored and widely disseminated in a user friendly format, targeting the “user community” and make recommendations to National Commission of Science and Technology. Dr. Jere teaches the following courses: Fish Genetics, Fish Taxonomy and Systematics, Biometry and Computing, Design and Analysis of Experiments, Statistics for Natural Resource Managers and Quantitative Methods in Natural Resources. He has worked as a guest lecturer at the University of Namibia in Aquaculture and Biosystematics. Dr. Jere's research interests are: fish morphometrics and shape analysis, use of fish species that are mollucivorous, larvivorous mosquitovorous or insectivorous as biological control of disease vectors; management and promotion of self-recruiting species in smallholder aquaculture farms; development of time series models for fisheries and use of Bayesian belief networks in aquaculture and fisheries management. Dr. Jere promotes the use of Microsoft Excel VBA for data management and R statistical software for statistical analysis among students and faculty.
