Professor Kang’ombe, Jeremiah is a Malawian working at the recently established Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) in Malawi, Bunda Campus (formally Bunda College of Agriculture, University of Malawi), Faculty of Natural Resources, Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Science in Malawi. He was born on 25 October 1969 in Ntcheu District, Malawi. He obtained his Diploma in Agriculture with Animal Science Option in 1992 and a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture with Animal Science Option in 1994 at the University of Malawi, Bunda College of Agriculture. He completed his MSc in Animal Science with research in Aquaculture Nutrition at University of Malawi, Bunda College, Department of Animal Science in 1997. He pursued his PhD in Biology with a major in Fish Nutrition at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada and finished in October 2004. He served as a Head of Department at University of Malawi, Bunda College of Agriculture, Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Science from 2005 to 2007. He has also worked as a Deputy Head of Department and Graduate Programmes Coordinator (MSc and PhD) in the same department up to 2012. He is the first Coordinator of the RUFORUM facilitated Regional Programme in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science PhD program hosted at LUANAR. He is a Professor of Aquaculture Nutrition, the position he was promoted to, on 09th December 2014 after being promoted to Associate Professor in 2010 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2007 and he was recruited as a Lecturer in Fish Nutrition on 8th September 1999. He teaches Fish Nutrition and Aquatic Weed and Predation courses to undergraduate (BSc) in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science students. He also teaches Fish Nutrition and Feed Technology to graduate (MSc and PhD) students. He has been Dean, Faculty of Postgraduate Studies from December 2012-January 2016. He has published more than 40 articles in refereed journals and conference proceeding including manuals and case studies in his area and related areas. He has been a member of several committees and associations at both national and international levels such as Aquaculture Association of Canada since 2001; Member, JICA-Malawi alumni Group; Board member, Trustee of Association for Rural Community Development (ARCOD) since 2006. Participated in the Malawi’s Presidential Initiative on Aquaculture Development (PIAD) in 2006. Contributor to the Gold Standard on Aquaculture Development Project Package, USAID-Compass Fisheries Department and World Fish Centre in 2007; Member of Tilapia internet based discussion group; Member and collaborator of SARNISSA Aquaculture Network Project, funded by EU and hosted by University of Stirling, Scotland; Member, Research into Use (RIU) program since 2008; Chairman, Council for Skyway Institute of Management and Development (SMARD), a Tertiary Education Institution since 2010-2012; Chairman, Council for Skyway University (SU), a Private Tertiary Education Institution since 2012; Director of the Board (Aquaculture and Fisheries), Press Cooperation, Foods Division since 2010; and Member of the Capacity Building for Managing Climate Change in Malawi (CABMACC) Advisory Committee from 2013 to 2016. He has also led numerous taskforces within the university including the Salary negotiations between the University and the government, Acting Chair of the University Selection Committee, Chair of the Deans Committee of the University just to mention a few. • He has worked with researchers nationally and around the world through Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Icelandic International Development Agency (ICEIDA), Scottish Government, World Fish just to mention a few. Recently he has been participating in projects such as Agriculture Technology transfer project (AgriTT) which has been working on development of fish feed for tilapia with the Chinese partners and funded by UK Aid through DFID. RUFORUM funded collaborative project in the Graduate Research Grants with Mzuzu University on Development of feed for tilapia using locally available ingredients in Nkhatabay. Supervising an MSc Student on the project studying: Nutritional evaluation of locally available ingredients from plant sources for the formulation of least-cost diet for Tilapia rendalli in mpamba area, Nkhatabay. The European Community Funded Project-Intra –Academic mobility project. LUANAR partnered with Makerere University as Team leader. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Haramaya University, Eduardo Mondlane University, Stellenbosch University, University of d’Abomey Calavi and University of Cape Coast. Training African students up to Masters Degrees, PhD, and Staff Exchange. Through this project, we attracted funding for scholarships to Bunda Collge LUANAR to train 5 MSc students in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science from Zambia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Burundi and Kenya. LUANAR will also send staff member to Makerere and a Student to Edwardo Mondlane University in Mozambique. School of Agriculture for Family Independence (SAFI) – Working collaboratively with stakeholders: Bunda College, BFI in USA, The Extension Department in the Ministry of Agriculture in Malawi in the training of Farmers, Lead farmers and Extension personnel. Involved in curriculum development and needs assessment. He is also a member of the team that worked on the recently approved Center of Excellence, Aquafish project at LUANAR to be funded by the World Bank He has research interests in local protein and energy sources, feed additives, nutritional disorders, natural feed dynamics, feed biotechnology applications, broodstock and larval nutrition, digestibility of locally available ingredients, on farm feed formulations, development of feed for intensive systems for tilapia, feed formulation for small scale/commercial fish farmers. New interest is to work with Malawian crabs (mud crabs, nutritional aspects on growth and reproduction; their potential for aquaculture). He has passion to work with the Aquaculture industry sorting fish nutrition and feed challenges and dealing with Intellectual Property (IP) issues.
