Fourth year students with stakeholders and members of staff
LUANAR’s Animal Science Department on Friday organized a farewell function for its outgoing forth year students as one way of creating a platform for the students to interact with stakeholders in the livestock sector.
Speaking at the event at Bunda Campus, Head of Department, Dr Liveness Banda said her Department aimed at producing high quality, creative and practically oriented students.
“Today’s function serves as a platform to showcase what our students have acquired in terms of research and other livestock production, processing and many more,” said Dr Banda.
She said through the function, stakeholders would have an idea of what goes on in the Department and LUANAR hence use this to find avenues to build strategic partnerships to utilize and improve on the information generated as well as conduct further meaningful research to address challenges and issues in the livestock industry.
“It is our sincere hope that through this function we will all find information and spur furtherance of the livestock industry and agriculture at large and beyond,” she said.
In her remarks Deputy Director for Animal Health Livestock Development in the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Mrs Mayuni said livestock is important as it can transform people’s lives in a short period of time hence the need for more effort in its development.
She hailed the students for choosing livestock as a career and urged them to have passion for it.
“Go there as agents of change. We expect you to add value to the industry. Let’s put livestock on the map,” she said.
To showcase knowledge and skills acquired through their studies, the students displayed about different technologies they have learnt in their four years of study.
The department also awarded outstanding students in all the years except second year which did not meet the required standards. The students, who went away with a small token appreciation were those whose GPA was above 3. One student was also recognized for being supportive as well as having good character.
