Written By: Patricia NkhomaThe Vice President of the Republic of Malawi, Right Hon. Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima on Thursday 19th May 2016, commended LUANAR for the progress made on the public Reforms being implemented by the institution.
Speaking in an interview during a three hour tour at LUANAR, the Vice President said he was pleased that the government initiated reforms at the institution are on track saying this will create a conducive teaching and learning environment once the projects are completed.
He said the projects will on the other hand assists the University to generate funds towards self-sustaining thereby reducing its dependency to government for support.
“As government we are very impressed with the self-sustaining approach taken by LUANAR because the income generating projects that the University is implementing will help it to be self-dependent than relying only government,” said the Vice President.
The Vice President cited the construction of a commercial centre as one of the innovative business model that will help to create jobs to students as well as the surrounding communities.
“It is pleasing to see that students as well as members of staff are being involved in these projects,” he said.
He added that the reforms that LUANAR is taking are in line with the government vision on taking the reforms from government to other levels.
“This tour is part of monitoring and evaluation for the agreed reforms and we are glad that what was agreed is what is being implemented,” he added.
LUANAR Vice Chancellor, Professor George Kanyama Phiri thanked the Vice President who happens to be the Public Service Reforms Commission Chairperson for coming to appreciate the progress of reforms at the University saying this is an indication that the initiative is being appreciated.
“As public universities are increasing student enrollment, the resources are getting limited. This is where we have to be innovative and that’s why we are constructing a commercial centre with the view to generate income,” said Professor Kanyama Phiri.
Apart from the Commercial Centre, the Vice President visited Bunda Main Farm, Seed processing Unit, Fish ponds as well as hostels which are part of the reforms in creating a conducive teaching and learning environment.
