A library is a hub of instruction delivery for promoting intellectual development at any institution of higher learning.
Its collection is deliberately designed to support analysis, synthesis and evaluation of information that increases students’ ability to retain and understand different concepts whilst taking responsibility of their own learning.
The absence of a library entails the absence of active learning at an academic institution. As such, it was with great shock to learn that Mzuzu University (Mzuni) Library collection of over 45,000 books and 100 computers was gutted by a fierce fire on 18th December, 2015.
Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) therefore decided to take a few of its library resources and donated them to Mzuni to help the institution in rebuilding its library.
According to Mr. Geoffrey F. Salanje, the University Librarian for LUANAR, the book donation has been made in response to the fire incidence and appeals made by the MZUNI management and the Malawi Library Association (MALA) to help MZUNI in rebuilding its library through kind donations.
He said over 700 books have been donated to MZUNI Library from the LUANAR Library.
“It is our sincerely hope that the books donated to MZUNI Library shall help in supporting instruction delivery that promotes students’ intellectual development at the university” Said Mr Salanje.
In acknowledging a receipt of the books, both Mzuzu University Librarian, Mr. Felix Majawa and Vice Chancellor, Dr Robert Ridley, expressed their gratitude for the timely donation.
In a letter signed by Mbachazwa Lungu, Mzuzu University Trust Fund Manager, the University expressed gratitude on the support that LUANAR rendered to them.
“There is no way to fully express our gratitude for your support. We at Mzuzu University are continuously inspired by the generosity of donors like LUANAR who answered the call to give at a time of need like this one. Your donation will help in educating our students who are the future leaders of this nation.” reads the letter.
The incidence act as a wakeup call to LUANAR Library to always remain vigilant and ready for any eventualities that could happen to the Library building and its contents.
