Welcome to Department of ABM

The Department of Agribusiness Management (ABM) is one of the departments in the Faculty of Development Studies of the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).

Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources is public university, which was created through an Act of Parliament No. 22 of 2011.

About

The University was created by delinking Bunda College of Agriculture, then a constituent college of the University of Malawi and transforming it into a university in its own right.However, Bunda College of Agriculture had been in existence since its inception in 1967 as a constituent college of the University of Malawi until in the year 2012 when it started its operations as LUANAR.

Currently, the Department offers two undergraduate program, namely, Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management and Bachelor of Science in Enterprise Development and Microfinance.The Department also offers one postgraduate programe at masters level. The postgraduate program is Master of Science in Agribusiness Management.

The Department of Agribusiness Management, whose core activities are teaching, research, consultancy and outreach, was created in 2005

To be a Centre of Excellence in providing knowledge and practical skills in agribusiness management for increased self-reliance and job creation.

In terms of human capacity, the Department has the Head of Department and a total of 11 academic staff, who are also researchers having a minimum qualification of Master’s Degree in various fields that include, International Development, Entrepreneurship, Accounting (with ACCA qualification), Economics/Agricultural Economics/ Food and Resource Economics, Finance and Microfinance, Human Resources Management, Business Administration and Marketing.
The Department has qualified and experienced secretarial personnel who work closely with academic staff in various operations and projects of the Department.

Our work

We have extensive experience in training and research as well as providing business development services for farmers, farmer organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations and the Government. The department has a team of 11 faculty, and two support personnel. The Department of ABM is the only Department that is offering long term training in cooperative and microfinance related studies in Malawi. Department of ABM is under the faculty of Development studies.
